“Wow. Could you sound a little more thrilled about it?” she harped back. Sylvia never had been a happy night owl.

“I wish I could,” he replied, collapsing into the chair, boneless. “He doesn’t know.”

“Ah. Decided to go that route after all?”

“It’s not exactly a science,” he retorted. He glared at the ceiling and all its dusky shadows. “If I thought I’d be happy with a woman, I’d try, but I’ve always known, okay?”
